I have been trying to arrange a meeting with this guy to look at his '48 H and probably buy it. This morning I got an e-mail that he is going to keep it because it's the only one he's ever owned.

Bummer. It looked real good from the pictures.

Now the search continues. I've already sold my '46, which was for the best. The Antique tractor show is coming up on the 21/22 of April. Maybe there will be one there. Who knows.

That's too bad because there were only around 425,000 of those Farmall H's made!

Have patience and keep your eyes open, the right one will drop into your lap when you least expect it - just like when I finally bought back my Dad's H. I bugged the guy about it for about 4 years and then gave up, a couple years later he called me up and said it was mine if I agreed to his price...

Mike,
Good suggestions below. Also, when you get a chance, go back and let your new farmer friend know the deal you thought you had fell through. The guy may know of another H in the area or at least he might offer to be on the look out. Networking works in the farming community as well or better than anywhere.
Mel

Mike, don't get in a hurry, wait, take your time, watch for farm sales in the paper, watch for ads for machinery for sale, but take your time. I have two H's and a B250 that came to me cheap because I waited and found out where they were and made a reasonable offer on my terms. I got a terrific H and a 6' field cultivator with it for $650, that H is the best running gas tractor I own. My B250 came to me through a friend who told me his sister in law had an old tractor she wanted to get rid of..$750..a good working little diesel. You will find many tractors in the mid west, you may have to travel and haul one back to California but take your time. There's lots of tractors up in Oregon as well. I beleive the key is to not jump at the first one you see, look around, if a seller is serious he will get back to you, don't be afraid to make an offer for less than the asking price. Finally don't let the stars get in your eyes, tractor shows are nice but your tractor doesn't have to go to one untill you have had plenty of time to get it done up and painted and in show condition. Don't let that force you to buy something your gut feeling tells you not to buy. Again Ihave always waited, took my time and I am very satisfied with the tractors I have got and the price I paid. I am sure I could double my money any time I want. Good luck Mike, you'll find the right one eventually.

Yeah, I was thinking of just throttling back, asking around, and keeping my eyes open. I'll go to the show with money, but I'm not gonna jump on anything right away I don't think.

Well said Michael. When we were younger my brother and I would get wound up about buying some vehicle and Dad would always say "It's not the only one in the world". That's especially true when talking about a Farmall H or M. There are lots of them out there.

E mail him Back and explain your intent to make new. Let him know you will let it "come home" for some real work at times, and he can operate it. Getting under his refusal is easier than you think. JimN
