Well, apparently my external filter only relocated the cause of the hydrauli pump whine. I bypasxsed the filter today and she is quiet as can be. A dramatic change. Now heres the thing. I cant run without a filter. The filter I put on it is 25microns, which is obviously too small. Good thing I didnt get the 10 micron. Now does anyone know what the original screen was? Does anyone know of any other place that sells the screens besides the dealer. I'm leaning towards just replacing the original in the resevoir. Being cheap has led me to waste 25$ on a filter assembly, and I cut the suction hardline, never to be original again. I am however ecstatic that the problem is figured out. It is SOOO quiet!! Still has load of power, and doesnt bog the engine nearly as much now.

Now ideas where to get a new or good used filter? Give me some names of some tractor parts yard that are good to deal with. I'll do some calling tomorrow. I'll get to make a new gasket for the cover now!! That was fun the first time around =P

THe company on this website has the element for referbing your intake screen Link o m The items are very usable for that application. I still think your new system would provide a usable function if it was aprtially bypassed. I also wanted to ask if the air was bled out of the filter when it was installed. JimN

yep jim, I put the filter on full of oil, then i opened the bleeder valve, and while my dad shot about 20lbs of air into the filler cap, i shut the setscrew when fluid started coming out.

As for the filter, I'm not worrying asbout it for at least a week. I got a car to work on now =) =\

There's no other place to get the screen except a CaseIH dealer. Demand for the part is zilcho, so there's no reason for anyone else to stock it.

Why can't you just put a less aggressive filter in?

Dunno why you thought spending hours chopping up the tractor, running here there and everywhere looking for parts was "cheaper" than simply breaking down and buying the right part in the first place.

well if you knew me very well, you'd soon find out I'm cheap and dont mind doing a bit of work to save a few bucks. Usually it works out pretty well, this time it didnt. Now I got an ugly hose splicing the suction pipe together. I might have my bro weld a new pipe in, or I might give it a shot. Bad thing is the pipe has to stay on the tractor so that it doesnt warp from the heat. I'm not keen to welding by gasoline =P.

Anyways, it just seemed absolutely ridiculous to spend $92 on a brass screen soldered on a pipe, 25 or 30, even $50 would be more reasonable. I also wanted to make it easier to change the filter. In short, I had good intentions, but well you know, stuff doesnt always work out.

I'm sorry my Idea seems to have saused a continuation of the problem. You stated it could flow 25GPM (if I remember corectly) so it can't be near flow capacity. I'll give one more idea (bouncing it gently). Put a bypass in the filter you now have plumed in that can be adjusted to divert fluid proportionally. through the filter, or direct to the pump. Thus filtering the oil. JimN

one more thing jim, the assembly has a built in bypass which furthers my point. The old pump is just not designed to pull a suction that this assembly requires to get the 25gpm. Now the guy I got the hydraulic manual from, he suggested that the assembly is too restrictive (and is one of the reasons I tried it without the filter assembly). The flow rate is 25gpm, but at what sort of vacuum. If the logsplitter pump can pull 2x the vacuum then this tractor pump, then it will probably flow more fluid. I should have realized this before. I guess they used a screen for a reason.

Once again, its nobody's fault, it is a learning experience, and if my posts help just one other person out, then it is worth it imho.

well jim, not entirely your fault, or any your fault in my opinion. I already had the filter assembly before I even started that thread. Thing is, this filter assembly is designed for modern day logsplitters which are 2500psi (which i didnt pay attention too), so they are probably inherently designed to be able to pull a better suction and they ARE on the suction side, I double checked the logsplitters at TSC, and they are all plumbed like that and these filter assemblies ARE sold as being replacements for those logsplitter series. I went with the 25micron, and I should have realized it would be too fine, as the old filter screen is probably more likre 100 or 200 microns.

Overall, I am more happy then upset, now its just a matter of figuring what to do. For now she will sit without a filter, which is fine cause she doesnt get much use as it is now. I'll figure something out. Ideally if I could find a filter that would fit this assembly and was alot coarser rating, that would probably be fine.

In hindsight, I should have just bit the $92 bullet, cause now it seems about $130 bullet is about to hit me in the butt =P

I looked on ebay for a used filter, none, but there is about 4 or 5 people selling 300 and 350u parts, so I sent them a message asking if they had one. Maybe I'll get lucky, find one, and the guy wont know what its worth and ill get it for like $10. That would offset that bullet and just make it a BB =P. Still gotta pull the res cover tho, but I got enough material to make another gasket. Thing is, I wanted to get my pontiac in the garage to work on it, guess the old 300 will have to wait its turn tarped up outside =P

You have no idea how good of a feeling it is to have the pump not sounding like its going to break into a million pieces. So Now I got 2 of the 4 main worries addressed, hydraulic pump is fine, the rear end/tranny gears are fine and noted, now the engine and clutch will just have to run til they die =P Engine holds about 55lns of pressure and no real bad sounds, I'm gonna check timing and maybe lean it out a tad, then she should be good to go. Weird enough, since the 12v conversion, Seems I dont need to use the choke? Starts up within a few seconds of hitting the key. That might be why I need to lean it out a bit with all of the carbon black soot on my flapper and stuff.
