Partial Paint Job?

Well guys. I'm thinking of asking my friend to help me do some painting. He has the shop to do it, but here's the thing.

His space is not big enough, and he cant do it outside, because of the close proximity to his neighbors. So I'm thinking of asking him to just help me prep and paint the loader , sheetmetal, and fenders. The rest of the trqctor isnt in terrible shape. Is there any other thin metal parts that I should think about painting that can be removed from the tractor? Maybe the foot pedestals, and clutch/brake pedals.

Not sure if he has anything in the shop at the moment, but its heated so temp and rain isnt a concern, and I'm expected to be laid off for a few more months, so I got the time, and he doesnt work. He's a pretty good guy and since I'd be supplying the paint, the prep materials and like half of the prep work, I think he'd help me for free, he's usually good about that. We help each other out, but seems he owes me more then I owe him.

Here's another thing, the muffler is through the hood, This is not stock, but almost has to be left the way it is for garage clearance and to reduce stress on the weleded cast manifold.

I also might think about having him paint the wheels. My right rear one is a concern since its fairly rusty. Are the tires hard to remove from the rims, is this something a shop would half to do? There is fluid in the rears, but thats no biggy.

My goal here it to extend the life of the parts that rust can readily damage, cast parts take ALOT longer to get harmed by rust then thin sheetmetal and rims. Also, do you think the result would look better then it normally does, or would the sharp contrast look horrible?

I would think if garage clearance were an issue the exhaust should be underslung like factory? I'd put 'er back the way it belongs. Weld a patch in the hole now while you can do all the grinding and sanding without worrying about saving paint. Do you plan on sandblasting? I would. Its the only way to get everything down to square 1. You're normal HF sandblaster and Craftsman compressor won't bend up the sheet metal, its a lot heavier than automotive stuff. As far as the rims go, check on new ones. Some sizes are pretty cheap. I know you can get a 14*38 Farmall rim painted silver from Miller tire in Wauseon for about 225. Your smaller 300U one might be even cheaper. Good paint will probably cost you 75 or so for both, then you still got old rims. We've painted rims with tires on 'em already. You can mask off the tire easier than removing it yourself. I know, we've done it in the field before, its all elbows and a**holes! If you think you might get new tires someday when you fix'er all up nice and pretty its no big deal if you get a little paint on the old ones. You can sandblast them too. The sand will bounce right off the rubber. I would take the fluid out though so no one gets squished!

Hi Jay. There are a lot of things you can remove and paint one at a time, I often do that myself. I recommend that if you dont do much heavy tillage to get rid of that fluid in those tires. It will destroy your rims eventually. If you dont know anything about tire replacement they can be difficult to remove. Check with local tire service they may remove them cheap for the fluid. I have a tire man here that trades tire labor for the fluid. There may be one in your area willing to make a deal. They are a lot easier to put back on.
