I used to drain fluid & service filters on these units, fire back up & have no trouble with pump picking up. there is a pipe elbow @ suction side of pump on some models that would loosen @ suck air, [o-ring] as others said, shaft seal.

Before you buy a new pump , invest a few dollars in the shaft seal in the pump , it is a disease of charge pumps.

When I charge my 450, I fill the 2" suction hose to the charge pump (without the engine running). I then quickly hook it to the intake screen and start the machine.

I suspect that you are drawing too much air when you run the engine, pour in oil and then try to connect the hose.

You should also only have to do this once. The machine should not loose oil in the suction hose when the machine is off. If it does, that suggests a leaky charge pump. Fortunately a charge pump is (relatively) inexpensive.

Best of luck,
John 1968 Case 450
