Charging circuit

I put my rebuilt alternator back in and everything seems to be working properly now except the ammeter stays between the first and second mark on the gauge after the machine has been running for over an hour. Is this normal? I thought it should barely show after running that long. Right after start up it charges a lot for about 5 seconds and then comes down. Another question, could my battery just have got low enough that it will take a while to fully charge up? I guess I'm worried I might cook my battery if it is constantly charging. Maybe everything is working properly? Just looking for some opinions from some of you that know a lot more than I do. Dave

Get a digital voltmeter and get a reliable reading of charge voltage..I've found digital is more exact than analog type voltmeter..Maybe the batteries are sulfated..Battery condition makes a difference in charging rates..Under 14 volts is an acceptable charge rate..Watch water consumption..Excessive consumption indicates overcharging..Do a cell specific gravity test to see what the condition of battery is...
