I have a JD 510 backhoe with the 8 speed powershift trans. The hydralics work good but in low gears the backhoe doesn't want to pull in foward or reverse, and when I try to use high gears the trans will wait a couple seconds and then it will all of a sudden engage and kill the motor what could be wrong?

As far as your problem with trans engaging. I would get a Tech manual and check C-3 clutch pack presure. There might be a problem with sealing rings , manifold casting , or clutch pack.

This machine should also be operated as if it were a stick shift machine. When the direction change takes place, It will either take off or stall out. These machines are not operated like a torque converter machine. Start off in lower gears and I'm sure it will work for you. These transmissions can be up shifted without clutching by just letting up on the accelerator pedal between shifts slightly. As far as downshifting, Take it easy , slow down with brakes as much as possible. These transmissions don't like a sudden downshift at speed. I've seen " operators" eat the steering wheel doing downshifts too agressivly.

You didn't say what you have tried so far. The first thing I would do is change the filters and hydraulic fluid. That will set you back a few bucks! If you haven't done that in a long time, you could have gallons of water in the oil. It's best to bleed what you can't drain at the cylinder lines. Keep adding oil as you bleed the old oil out. There could be broken springs on some of the relief valves. This is common on older machine that have water in the system. The inching pedal bypass could also be hanging up. I would get a parts and tech manual and start eliminating things one at a time.
