I have a 4500 (I think) backhoe which has two problems. First the curl on the backhoe bucket is weak compared to the rest of the operations of the hoe. I think the hoe in general is a little lazy but I'm not sure. The loader is STRONG. I replaced all the hoses on the backhoe at the control valve and I found a steel spacer on the ground I think it came out of one of the lines to act as a restricter to build pressure but I left it out becuase I did not know where it came from and it seemed like a farmer fix rather than an oem part to me but what do I know. Does anyone have pressures for the hoe? Why could it all seem weak but the loader be strong?
My second question is about the power steering (it has it's own pump but is sumped off the main hyd fluid). It works intermitently. I see there a lot of posts about this but I can not find any answers. It turns easier to one side and in general it has good days and bad days. I installed new king pins and busings and they are not binding. I took off one the plugs on the power steering pump and at idle fluid shot accross my yard. I did not take a pressure but clearly it has a lot. If you fool with the adjustment you can get it to steer better to one side but the other side goes away. Could the weak hoe and power steering problems be related? Please help?

As mentioned the 750 series hoes relieve at 2200 psi of system pressure, the 730 series loaders relieve at 1600 psi. I pulled all my circuit relief valves for my hoe and found the orings missing. Replacing them helped but I still had to work on the linkages, re-pack cylinders and last week I replaced the pump which made it operate better than ever.

I also have a Ford 4500, power steering is a real weak point on these tractors. One important thing I found out with the power steering is to always add fluid with the tractor running. The power steering resevior has a o-ring seal that keeps the power steering fluid seperated from the crankcase. Filling the resevior and then starting the tractor can overpressure the steering pump and blow out the o-ring/seal and let your power steering fluid into the crankcase. Your restrictor probably came from the boom swing lines. Mine are out as well and the left/right swing is very fast. Not good if you don"t pay attention it will break the chain that swings the boom. My hoe has 20,000+ hours on it and the controls have never been adjusted for slop and still work well. It is amazing how strong the hyd system is on these old girls. If it didn"t have such conglomeration of levers to run the hoe, I could dig as fast as any more modern machine (of same hp).

According to the Ford service manual for the 750, 753 and 755 backhoes (the 4500 should have a 755 hoe), the relief pressures are: - system relief 2200 psi - boom lift (piston end) 3500 psi - boom lift (rod end) 3500 psi - crowd (piston end) 4000 psi - bucket (rod end) 2350 psi
All 5 relief valves are in the main valve block.
Like williamf says, your problem may be as simple as a sloppy lever linkage.

The backhoe on my 3500 got MUCH stronger when I reworked the linkages between the levers and the valves. The multitudinous pins, bushings, rods, shafts and such had worn to the point that none of them pushed the valves quite all the way. I would have thought that would have made it slower but that the pressure would eventually build up, but that's not the case. I did not replace by any means all the little bits and pieces, but enough to give the valves their full range. Worked wonders.

If your power steering pump feeds off the hyd
resivor than you have the older first series of 4500, like mine. This had the same power steering
setup as a 5000 series farm tractor. You will need
a 5000 manual to cover the adjustments. All the
old 4500 have steering problems, I finally found
a retired ford mechanic who was able to correct
the steering for a few years but now its back to
turning only one way and sometimes not at all.
