Does anyone know the weight of a 1983 225 CAT excavator? Also with this vintage of machine what are the common problems, ie what do I look for when purchasing one and what do I avoid?

Look for repaired cracks in the stick and boom tip aswell as the ears where the boom attaches to the upper structure. Make sure they haven't been done roughly. Pin and bushing wear in the boom and stick is a big concern too. The more movement between pin and bushings the likely the boom and stick are to crack. It takes some big money to recondition the boom and stick right, welding up and lineboreing bushing bores and pin holes. A worn bushing likely has a pounded out bore aswell.

Yep, a guy I know is having the bottom boom repaired right now on his 235, probably around a mid to later 80s model. Its my understanding that(at least with the 235 hoes) that this was one of the few Cat screw ups. They just made the lower booms weak. I look at the extra plating and the upper boom and stick are way beafier. On my friends hoe I believe its the 3rd boom or repair since new. He was telling me that there are very few 235s that have not been repaired or replaced since they were new. Even if you were to find a boom on the market it was most likley repaired at one time. I realize you have a 225 but thought the info might be helpful anyway just incase those models suffered the same problems.

Don't have one but have spent a lot of time around those 200 series machines. Fix them right and they stay fixed.

Weight 52,000 give or take depending on options, like stick length, and carriage length. Check fluid levels, swing bearing and retaining bolts, track frame to main frame bolts.
