I am looking at a ford 1986 ford 555 backhoe. first does anyone know when the various models came out, a,b,c,d,e? says its a 1986 but think a straight 555 last year was 1979?

I have read thorught the posts and seems the transmissions are the weak spot on these machines.

then stress cracking. am i right?

I currently have a jd 500a, with a power shift trans which is pretty much bullit proof.

so should I stay away form the 555?

I know the case 580 c/d were good and very inexpensive to repair, but the visablity is not great.

Ford 555 /555A/555b/555c were 3 cyl engines. 555dcame out with a 4cyl and had more power. even the 3 cyl was the best backhoe made in it's day. Proven fastest digging in a straight line, no more weak points than anyother brand. Real hard to beat machines. HTH, Nat
