Bobcat recommends their own fluid, or 10-40 motor oil if the fluid is not available. What dio you use? I'm considering using Shell Rotella synthetic 10-40 motor oil.

I always use hydro fluid with ISO 46 rating in my skid steer and other machines.Never had a problem doing so.

Maybe I misunderstood your post. You state Bobcat hydraulic fluid and then you are referring to motor oils. Yes, Bobcat manual does state that 10W30 motor oil can be used in the hydro system in an emergency, but I would not recommend it unless you were in a pickle with a busted line on a Sunday or something. I changed the fluids in mine this summer and found the Bobcat hydraulic fluid to be very reasonably priced at the dealer; cheaper than a Shell or Mobil product at NAPA. That is for the hydraulic system and the chain bath reservoirs. For motor oil, I use Rotella or DELO 15W40. The dealer told me that is what they use... in the motor. This is only my opinion; I do not have near the experience most of these people have with these machines. Thanks, David in SC

The manual states the 10w-30 motor oil is what the hydraulic system requires. The chain baths require 90w oil. I think you have the wrong manual. I own 4 bobcat machines and nowhere in the manual does it say to run hy- tran in the hydraulic system. I also worked a summer at a bobcat dealership and thats what they put in them to.

So back to my original question: would Shell Rotella synthetic diesel motor oil be a good choice for the hydraulics?

Stuart, My manual (763 operation and maintenance manual #6900371 printed 8/98 revised 8/00) states on page 99 that the hydraulic system uses Bobcat Fluid part number 6563328. It then states that 10W30/40 SE can be used. Then, on page 73 of same manual, in the Final Drive Transmission (Chaincase) section, it states that this system uses the same type of oil as the hydraulic/hydrostatic sytem. See Page 99. Now, I am really confused because when I bought my Bobcat I bought what the dealer sold me as the correct fluid. Bobcat hydraulic/hydrostatic transmission fluid, part # 6722344. I have not yet changed the chaincase fluid, but I did put it in the hydro system and I feel it is the right stuff. Even though the numbers do not match, I believe, from reading the manual, that it is the right stuff to use in the chaincase. Do I really feel that way. No way, I run a maintenance department and we do not use hydraulic oils normally to lubricate roller chain. Please chime in and correct me if I am wrong. I sure do not want to give wrong information to anyone. Thanks for your information. David in SC

Yes it is the same oil, old/new part numbers, Bobcat does use this same oil in the chaincase.

I use synthetic fluids in everything I own. Bobcat won't give me the specs on their fluid. I don't know if it's synthetic or not. If it's not, I don't want to use it. Harley always specified their own oil as well, but it was not particularly good oil. I always used synthetics in my Harleys.

My dealer (Bobcat of Boston) tells me to use ATF, and that's worked fine in my older model (610).
