My 885 is being very cantankerous, the darn thing will not start. I have done several things to no avail. (jumped the starter, pulled and rebuilt starter, etc.) The thing of it all is, when I try to roll start the tractor and pop the clutch (in 4-hi)the darn thing still won't turnover. Any thoughts or suggestions?

You didn't mention diesel or gas. If it's diesel and your cylinders, rings and pistons are in good shape, then you're trying to overcome a good bit of compression to get that thing to turn over. I have an 885 diesel that had been sitting for a few years by the time I got to it. Pull starting wouldn't do the trick, just slide the tires. It showed that the oil was full on the dipstick, but when I drained the pan, a good portion of what came out was water. Had no cap on the vertical exhaust and the drain plug on the intake manifold let out at least a quart of water. I took the starter off at this time and had it tested. The electric shop said it would turn OK, but not enough to turn over a diesel. In the meantime I got the engine to turn over with the help of a 1/2" drive socket set and a really hefty breaker bar. When the starter came back and everything was buttoned up, it turned over with the starter and ran after about half a dozen tries. I still don't know if the prolem was a jammed starter drive or a water hydraulic lock. Anyway, It's been well over a year now and it starts and runs just like it should. Good luck with yours, Jim

Thanks Jim, It is indeed a diesel, and had been sitting for quite a while. I have had the starter tested and it was good enough to turn over the diesel engine. I will drain the pan and check for water in the intake manifold and try to turn the engine over like you and Elmer mentioned. Thanks so much for your assistance.

Do you mean the engine is locked up?

I do not believe that the engine is locked up, but I am not sure how to diagnose that it is or it isn't. I have roll started it before with success and it ran perfectly.

If you have a 1 1/2 inch wrench turn the engine by the nut on the front crankshaft pully. If not then remove the starter and turn the flywheel with a srew driver on the ring gear teeth. If it is still stuck then have someone fully depress the clutch peadl to release the transmission and pto clutchs. Would'nt hurt to do that one first.
