Mike,

I see you said somthing about boiling out your gas tank.

Does this help with the rust, and do you just dump boiling water in, or throw the gas tank in a fire with water in it(haha)

Thanks in advance Mike

Dave

Try red Kote, our carquest store handles the stuff. Runs about 16.00 for a quart.

If you have another tractor with spoked wheels, duck tape your tank to the spoked wheel and throw some ---STEEL ----shot gun bb's into the tank and drive around for a while. Then power wash, rinse and treat it with a sealer. I do not use rocks or log chains etc. in the tank if it has baffles. If it has baffles in the tank you must use small items so they do not become lodged in behind the baffles. My sturdy wife likes the spoked wheels better than me having her shake the tank for a 8 hour day--bless her little heart. Dave NE Iowa

I have been sealing gas tanks for 30 years and have tried several products. POR-15 is the best I have found. $20 for a quart that will do a 25 gallon tank. Awesome stuff. Cover any holes with duct tape, pour POR 15 inside

Dave:

If it's dirty or oily at all, clean it first with some alkaline cleaner, or a few tablespoons of lye and agitate, then blast with the powerwasher. I generally cork the bottom and let them sit full of lye water overnight, then powerwash.

If all you have is rust, you can try Phosphoric Acid (not Muriatic Acid!). It will convert the red rust to inert black oxide, but not hurt the steel, and let a nice rust-resistant phosphate coating behind. Throw in a short length of chain to help agitate, and then hit it with a powerwasher when through.

I had mine dipped in the hot tank at a local radiator shop.

I think they charged me $25.00

Craig,

I can't answer your question- 'cause I haven't bought a sealer kit yet. If you look below- Dr.C said his version came from Eastwood.

Another brand is POR-15 (I think) and Kreem. I think those might be available at NAPA.

Good luck.

Craig,

I have used Kreem in a lawn tractor tank, It works, but I think it is starting to break down. That is why I am trying to figure out what to do with my case sc.

I forgot about the rust part-

The hot dip should remove most of the loose stuff and disolve any varnish, but to knock the rust off the inside of the tank- you can put small rocks or a piece of chain inside and tumble the tank around as an abrasive to clean the inside.

Keep washing with water until it runs out clear.

Then you can do one of those acid wash/tank sealer product thingamabobs for fuel tanks.

Dr. Cy Kosis just did the tank on his Case L, but I can't remember which product he used...

I used a gas tank sealing kit from Eastwood. It came with everything needed but muratic acid and acetone thats obtainable from any hardware store.

Its a very thorough process they use and can take all day but I was very pleased with the end results. My tank had 23 holes in it that I could see daylight through and it sealed them all. The only thing I'd add is that if you're doing a large tank, 15 galloons or more, I'd order an extra bottle of the 'Goo'. The basic kit was about $55 by the time you add shipping.

I'm about to clean and coat my C tank now and end my rust and seep problems with it forever too.
