I have an oppertunity to buy a roto baler and was wondering what a fair price for one in fair condition that is working but needs some TLC?

Thank you.

Price?- a few hundred dollars. Dad bought one new in 1948, ran it through 1964, up to 6-7000 bales per year with our own and custom work. Broke one part twice- a cast part that had to be welded- was part of the arms that discharged the bale. Very dependable machine. Definitely needs the windrow to be made properly, just like today's big round balers. Compare it to any IH baler- which never made a decent knot? AC was way ahead of it's time- IH has yet to make a decent baler. JD, NH, yes- excellent machines for square bales. Roto-Baler was unique in it's time, and was a good machine. Round bales could shed water- when most farmers had no shelter for hay. Square bales, stacked outside- soaked it up and rotted!

My opinion: Why would any one want to bring one of those Balers home? I had a Farm Sale bought Roto-Baler and could not get rid of it fast enough. I bought a new IHC 45 and ran the roto-Baler into a Ravine . It was nothing but a constant stop and patch process to try and bale with it and it came from a Farmer who used it a lot, maybe to much of "a Lot". Except for Nostalgia I would not pay any thing for one of AC's mistakes.

Geeze they must be really bad if you thought an IH was an improvement.

We are talking the 1960's Mister. Of course it was an improvement over the Piece of Junk I bought. The only one guilty is myself for being suckered into buying the Junker. After wards[twenty-twenty] my Neighbor told me,"You should have asked me, I would have told you of the Million bales that Baler has made". My retort to him was,"What Baler?" "I don't know what you are talking about","I got rid of that baler as soon as I got it home"[in the big Ditch at the back of the Farm]. When I Farmed I owned a lot of AC Equipment,4 AC Tractors, a Gleaner Combine,Plows,Discs,Cultivator,Ensilage Blower,7' Sickle Bar Mowers, Running Gears,Hay Rakes, but I finally got "Snookered" with that Roto-Baler.Now what do you think?

Thanks guys for the info..... I am waiting on the guy that has them to tell me a price..... .he actually has two one is in bad shape with all the belts almost gone..... .the other is in better shape and looks like it might have been shedded..... .so now that I got a range of prices on them I will let him make the offer and I will see if i want to tackle it..... ..not really looking for one to do my hard core baling with as I already have a NH271 but I think it would be nice to have one to fix up and restore and use on occasion..... ..

John and John are right on. It also depends on if the unit is a late model white top baler with full shielding (limited production run from '72 to '74). I have seen late model white tops in good working condition bring $600 to $1000+. I have also seen older models in poor condition (and some in working condition) bring $10 at auctions. I paid $650 for my '73 model in excellent original condition. Keep in mind that new belts are expensive and that older units are plentiful. Best of luck.

There aren`t too many things that can give you more headaches than a rotobaler that isn`t working properly. Believe me, I use to bale several thousand bales a year with one. I seldom see one sold today that hasn`t been setting outside and unused for several years. $100 is top dollar for most of those. A $250 baler would most likely have new belts and have been stored inside while not in use, but had been used this year.

If it needs some TLC it isn't working! The price for one like that runs from $75 to $250. If it didn't need TLC you could go to $500 without too much trouble.

If it has been stored anywhere but in a shed it will need a lot of TLC to get in true working condition.

It will cost you $500.00 to put new belts on a roto baler. I own 4 of them and bought my first one as a spare. When I was forced to use it when my square baler went down I was surprised at how good mine worked. I baled around 1,000 bales with it the first day and got that up to 1,200 bales per day after I got used to it.
If you are not mechanically inclined stay away from the roto baler, if you have a knack with machines then I would not hesitate. They are old and somewhat slower than a modern square baler but I have found them to be reliable and rugged.

I paid $250 each for my first two, $100.00 for another and $325.00 for the latest purchase. I plan to have all 4 up to field ready condition with 2 set up for native grass and 2 set up for alfalfa.
