D15 starter stuck

I went to start my '61 D15, gas, this morning and it didn't fire on the first try. When I released the key from "start" to "run", the starter stayed engaged. So I moved the key to "off" and the starter still stayed engaged and was trying to turn the motor over. The battery was weak, so unhooked it and went to get my truck to jump start the tractor. When I hooked-up the battery and jumper cables, the starter was still engaged and trying to spin the motor.

So what gives? Why has this suddenly happened? What do I do to fix it?

I don't think that's the case. With the battery unhooked, I tried spinning the motor by hand and could hear that the starter gear was still out/engaged.

Aren't there oil wicks on the old starters? Could it be that they are dry and things are sticking? Or is it more serious?

Yup...it was the solenoid.

Sometimes the solenoid sticks and you have to strike it with a heavy tool to knock it loose. If it is stuck badly, replace it. Some bendix drives are made to stick into the flywheel until the engine is running. If you tow the tractor and spin the engine, it should kick out.
