Restoring a 37 WC, gas tank has black tarnish looking stuff in it. Surprizing not muck rust! How do you break up and remove this stuff so you can clean with acid? Thanks

If you use the acid, be sure to rinse with clean water to neutralize the acid, then put in a half quart of MEK to absorb water then repeat with additional half quart. Tank is ready to coat then. Methyl, ethyl, ketone.

Gas residue Re: tank cleaning in reply to 37 Allis, 08-05-2007 05:31:13
If it is black and has a very bad smell to it this may be old gas "Varnish" residue if it is that and not corrosion, use alcohol or lacquer thinner to desolve and clean. Test first!

We had this problem on a tractor I was working on. The owner wouldn't let me pour anything into the tank to dissolve it, so we ended up scraping it out by hand mostly, and then sending the tank off to have it cleaned. I had a good 7 gallons of old leaded gas go all over my shirt, pants, arms, and down into my boots. I was an hour or so before I could wash off and about 3 hours before I could change clothes... And I was sick for about a week afterwards.

BE CAREFUL WHEN DEALING WITH THIS STUFF. IT IS HAZARDOUS.

I use muratic acid(2 gallons about$5/gallon at tsc)
++++++++++++++You need to be careful(Eye protection),Make sure no little kids are around for a day,and well ventilated area.DO NOT BREATH THE FUMES+++++++++++++++++++++

remove tank and sediment bowl and plug hole with .
Add 2 gallons acid.give it a shake, every couple hours give it a shake(24 hours),drain somewhere safe and wash out very good with water=air dry in sun.Can use as is or JC Whitney sells cans of sealer for about $20-$25.I usually just run the tank as is after cleaning.
-some people use spinning devices, tie tank to rear tire of a tractor with BB,s or pea gravel inside.
-Make sure you remove the sediment bowl because I learned the hard way on my first one the acid ate it off.
