I looked at a 5040, and a friend said he noticed some blow by on the left side of the engine by the exhaust manifold. I only noticed that the muffler was loose and leaking a little. What is average on blow by or is it a sure sign of trouble. I will not use this tractor everyday, move dirt with the loader, and some mowing. Thanks for any info.

all engines have blowby...even brand new...as rings wear it gets more noticeable.
locate the oil fill and pull breather/cap off while engine is running...shouldnt be more than a slight haze of smoke coming out of tube.
keep in mind the more smoke you see,the more the engine is worn...even so blowby doesnt mean the tractor is unusable...keep it full of oil and it'll probably go for many years.
