My inlaws have an alice-chalmers 5040 that that mainly use to run a bushhog. To make the PTO work, we have to shift the pto lever into gear and start the tractor that way- the pto turns all the time. My father-in-law says that the PTO used to disengage when you pushed in the clutch pedal, but not anymore. How is this tractor set up internally? Does that clutch pedal release two clutches? Is there possibly some linkage that I could adjust?

I"m a mechanic at a Deere dealership, so I"m pretty familiar with tractors, but I"ve never messed with an alice chalmers much. Thanks for any advice.

I do not know the 5040 but normally the two stage clutch works something like this. With the clutch pedel all the way up both the PTO and the tractor are powered. Push the pedal down somewhere near halfway the ground drive to the tractor should be disengaged but the PTO should still be powered. Continue pushing the clutch pedal down should disengage power to the PTO. You may need to split the tractor to find what your problem is.
