melted the posotive terminal on my C

I just had the generator rebuilt on my C and had some wiring "issues" I thought I had all worked out. I put on a new resistor, and batterey checked and double checked all my wiring.

Mowed my yard last night and the tractor sputtered and died then started smoking at the starter. I looked down and saw that the posotive cable was melted off at the batterey.

Any idea what the problem is here??

Did you polarize the system after having it apart?

Could be a bad starter switch, OR could be a bad cable or cable connection at the starter. Also could be a bad pos. ground cable if still 6V. Make sure the cable size is at least 1 gauge for 6V systems.

Started smokeing at the starter, not good. Is it still the push button or a soliniod set up on the starter?? Also was it the wire smokeing at the starter or the starter its self. If it was the starter its sefl you probably have a burned up starter now. Also if it was the starter what most likely happen is when the engine started the starter kicked out from the flywheel but kept spinning and it doesn't take long for a starter to burn its self up and as it did it was takeing power from the battery which caused the engine to die when the battery got lower and that is also what burned up the battery cable.

It has the push button on the bottom, and from what I could tell the smoke was coming from where the batterey wire hooked to the starter.

Ok a couple more questions then. Is that also where the tractor picks up power to run the distubutor etc?? If it is then you either have a short some place and its pulling enough amps to heat up the battery cable but I wouldn't think it could do that since the ignition wire should be smaller and it should be the one that would smoke. It could also be that the starter switch its self is going bad and has a short to ground and that would burn up the battery cable and could also cause a fire. What I would do is this. Unhook the battery cable and any other wires at the starter switch. Then is you have a meter or test light go from the battery cable to the starter switch and see what reading you get. It should be 0, also do that to the ignition wire with the switch off it should also be 0 if it isn't 0 in both places you have a short and from there you should now know which way you need to go to find the short

Most likely a loose connection and it was arcing there.
