I just had my generator rebuilt, and was told by the rebuilder that the armature was toasted from being over worked, so I decided to check all the wiring to be sure that everything was working properly. Ive searched thru the archives and found threads explaining how the charging system works. Ive came to the conclusion that the resistor is not working, the wiring from the back side of the cutout thru the ampmeter on to the starter is fine, and the Field wire from the generator to the resistor is fine.

Now for the part I need help with, there is wire that runs from the Armature to the resistor. None of the wiring diagrams I have looked at show this wire, and none of the explanations that I have read mention this wire. Is it even supposed to be there? Also I can unhook the Field wire and the mystery Armature wire from the resistor/switch and test them and there is continuity between the two that would have to be coming from inside the generator.....is this correct???

As Rod mentioned, there is only one wire that runs to the resistor leg, and that's from the "F" (field) terminal on the gennie. The 6V system utilizes the grounds to operate the charging system, and everything needs to be grounded correctly (including the 3 pos. switch) for the gennie to do its charging chore job. We offer an exchange switch if needed and lot's of information on the system if needed. Just drop us a line or give us a call. Be glad to help you out with anything electrical on board your tractor.

the F terminal on the generator is the ground side and goes to the resistor switch to be grounded. the A ternimal is the hot wire and goes to the negative battery terminal thru the amp meter. the A terminal is not connected anyway to the light switch. the light switch does have a hot wire from the ampmeter, but that is to run the lights and is not by the reistor.

Hi i had the field wire missing, earthed to the generator on my U and was helped with problem yesterday on the forum.I checked my resistor with a multimeter, placing one lead on the screw lug for the field wire that should go to the generator and the other earthed to the ammeter metal housing. It showed 2.5 ohms with light switch in and 0 ohms (direct earth)with the switch pulled out.I fitted a new wire from the resisror lug to the generator field pole and it now works fine. The wiring diagram on your link was just what i could of done with yesterday!!

That is the same diagram that I was reffering to.

It does not show a third wire coming off of the generator armature going to the resistor/switch.

I looked at another local guy's tractor and there was no wire connected to the armature other than the short one that goes to the cutout.

Is there even supposed to be a wire that goes directly from the armature to the resistor/switch???

From the looks of the diagram I am wondering if the preveous owner had the headlight wire hooked to the armature by mistake.

Any wire that is not on the diagram would not be needed for the system to work. I would remove that wire and relocate it if needed for lights or something else. I do not know the condition of your switch but if it were in good condition you would have lugs with screws in them to hook up your lights.
