The one I've always used is the center of pull on the plow should be 4 to 6" left of the center of the plow cut. I believe I got it out of a John Deere plow manual written in the 40's. For instance, with 2-16, the center point of pull would be 20" to 22" from the dead furrow. The tractor should be set to pull from the center as well. However, you could play games with the hitch point on the tractor if your traction is significantly different from the land wheel to the dead furrow wheel by having the land wheel out as far as it will go. Land wheels invariably have lower traction.

You are pretty close- the JD book says line of draft for any plow is 1/4 of the plow bottom width, to the left of center of the total width of cut of the plow. So on a 2-16 plow, the line of draft would be 4 inches left of center. The hitch of the plow should be centered on that point, and the tractor furrow wheel aligned that far to the right of center of the tractor, with the inside of the tire against the furrow wall.

I was about 14 or 15 when I reead that excerpt from John Deere. I immediately went out and changed the hitch to match the 4" dimension on our 2-16 plow. I thought the plow pulled easier after the adjustment. I guess I just remembered it for 35 years.
