Hi guys,

I'm looking at a 190 to pull a round baler and mow. What do you think about this tractor? The only experience I have is with a WD. The guy wants $4500 for a gas with a loader. Is this a good buy??? Its in SW missouri.

Thanks
God Bless

I've been using a 190XT diesel for 12 years to round bale with. It works great for this. Note great for small places because of the size. Using the power director is not bad once you get used to it. The diesel would be cheaper on fuel even with the higher per gallon price. My 190XT used less fuel than the smaller gas tractors I have had. $4500 does not sound unreasonable if it has a good loader.

Well I"d much rather have a tractor with a power director than one with just a 2 stage foot clutch, but to each his own. I"m assuming you are talking about pulling a big round baler and not an AC rotobaler. If that"s the case, then the 190 is sure not too big. It will also do good with one of the larger mowers, you won"t have to look for a 5 footer. You will want to make sure the transmission is good and that the power director is working good or can be adjusted and won"t have to be replaced. Now for the price. A friend bought a gas 190 with a loader for $2000 earlier this year, in Northern MO. I think he stole it but he swears he didn"t. I don"t think $4500 would be a bad price for one in really good condition. You"ll be hard pressed to find any other brand in that size range for that price.

A 190 GAS Tractor could get VERY thirsty on a baler. I would hold out for a diesel.

Your buy in is going to be more with a diesel tractor than a gas tractor.

You can get a carb kit for a gas tractor for about $40., what's a pump overhaul going to cost you for a diesel.

Diesel fuel is right now about 15% higher than gas.

Everyone is going to have to do their own math on this one. I don't think it a given that a 190 diesel is going to be cheaper to own and use than a 190 gas.

Well if I where you I wouldn't buy it for 2 reasons. 1 no true live PTO and 2 its just to big for most things like that. Guess how I know?? Another thing in Missouri a 190 or 190XT has a book value of around $3000. I had one a couple years ago and it did ok but when you had to stop to kick out a bale it would always try to creap forward. By the way where in Missouri are you. I'm also in MO.

I have to dispute your first reason. I don"t think this board needs to get into the drawn out discussion of live vs. indepenant PTO"s on allis" for a long time, after the last one I saw on here. In my opinion (from running a 200 D in a hay operation) the Power Director system works great for baling, both round and square. When your bale is complete, put the PD in neutral, wrap/tie the bale, and kick it out. If you were still creeping forward, chances are (if things were all warmed up) the PD was starting to get warn out, causing it to drag in neutral. This could also be an adjustment problem, but with a full RB, thats a lot of weight to move purely on light friction (unless headed down hill). As to the price of the machine, it sounds reasonable to me, may bring up the gas situation with the owner while bargaining a bit. I don"t know what mounting differeces there are b/w the gas and diesels, but couldn"t you drop a 2900 series diesel in?

the 190 is an ok tractor but if you push the clutch the pto stops you have to use the powerdirectorlever to keep the pto turning. it works but takes some getting use to
