Since our Ford 801 was crushed by a giant oak tree during hurricane Dennis, our D17 has assumed the position of the only usable tractor we have with any kind of power. (Our other two tractors are IHC Cubs) The problem with the D17 is that the 3-point lift barely works and we're trying to troubleshoot what the problem is. First--a little info about the tractor. Year model 1959, diesel. Came with snap-coupler setup and the two upper lift arms. Installed a three-point hitch after we got the tractor home. It also came with a three-way?? valve that the previous owner said was used to control a street sweeper. We removed that valve and the two hoses used to connect it.

To get the lift to actually work, I have to tighten the transport valve knob. When I set the lift lever on the steering wheel column, nothing will happen unless I slowly tighten the transport valve knob. The lift will either go up or down but will not hold a position without a constant adjustment on the lift lever or the transport valve. (I assume this might be a holding valve problem.) This makes for very difficult (or impossible) box-blading or grading work. Another piece of info--the belly pump makes a noticeable ticking or tapping noise once I start using the lift. When the lift goes all the way up, the
Traction Booster gauge approaches the "pegged" position and the needle fluctuates rapidly up and down.

Within our family we lost three homes to the hurricane and I'm the only one that owns a tractor so the tractor (and me the operator) are in high demand to perform clean-up and salvage operations. I'd like to get this rig working properly ASAP.

Thanks to all replies.

Kevin,

The noises you hear are perfectly normal. When you have control all the way up in the locked position it will tick constantly but nothing to worry about. As for the transport valve if you don"t need it get rid of it. Take the supply line that comes out of the top of the torque tube and run it direct to an external remote if there is one. If not cap it off.

Are you saying to block off the 1/2" steel tubing line that runs from the front to the transport valve? In other words, remove the line all together and plug the tapped hole on top of the housing??

Kevin-
is it possible that you have a linkage problem on the lift control?
I had similar symptoms on my Case 395. I had to use the draft control to lift anything, and that meant all the way up or all the way down. The draft control sounds similar to you travel control.
The fix (in my case) was easy and cheap: I opened a plate on the top of the transmission, and right away saw some linkage hanging loose. Fixed with a 7 cent circlip. Note that the linkage was inside the transmission: the linkage was not visible until I looked inside.
I think you should take a close look at your linkage, and perhaps someone on the board here can verify if your tractor is like mine in that it has some internal linkage (or not.)
Good luck!

Kevin, I've done some reading in my IT manual, AC-17, to try to understand your problems. If I understand the manual correctly and your explanation, your hydraulics is set up for a transfer valve. The transfer valve design permits the use of traction booster with pull type implements such as a large tandem disk with transport wheels. So your traction booster is connected to the lift system in some elaborate manner that I cannot explain. What it does say will happen with it is consistant with what you say. There is a normal leakage through the valve which will cause the cylinder to drop unless the lever is all the way up. Lift and hold does not appear to be available as no descritpion is there for adjusting for lift and hold. This sounds about the same in the Operating Manual. The transport system is not designed for lift and hold unless it has a selector lever.

I'm not experienced with the transport valve. My D-17 has the oil distribution housing which does permit lift and hold.

I'll send you what I have if you send me an email. However, I second Hurst's suggestion to look for more information.

The ticking sound is normal with the piston pump.

Possibly replacing the transfer valve with the distribution housing will give you what you want. But I can't assure you that is the case.

Good luck.

Try the unofficial Allis board. allischalmers "dot" com. Sorry, this site won't let me post a message with that address in it. There will be someone over there who can most likely help you ASAP and the archives probably have the answer too. Good luck and sorry to hear about your loss.

Hurst
