Almost ready to start our "B" which has been sitting for 30+ years (we have done a lot of engine work), I got spark plugs but am not sure if they will work or not. The name/number on them is Autolite 303. Can someone tell me if they will work? Thanks!
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I'm sure the Autolite 303 would work. However I don't think they are the best choice. If you want to stick with Autolite, the Autolite 295 is a better choice for a B in my opinion. It's also a hotter plug than the 303 which would make it better from a fouling standpoint. See here. Plus, the 295 is the plug listed by Autolite for an AC-B using gasoline. I used to use AC-45 as a direct listed plug for my B until I could no longer get them locally. I switched to NGK B4, a direct cross for the AC-45, some years ago and have been very happy with them. I have also used the Autolite 295 which seemed to be very good also except not as readily available locally as the NGK. The Autolite 295 also crosses directly to the NGK B4.

Hey ya Rod, two of my favorite tools: an old B&D 12VDC spark plug cleaner from the 70's that went off of the market almost as fast as it appeared. Uses the same beads as the spark plug blaster pouch that I have for my compressor. The compressor is faster because of the volume, I don't have to rotate the plugs, but the B&D works good too - 15 seconds, rotate a 1/4 turn, and do until get all the way around, and re-gap some clean, still in great physical shape plugs. I run AC R45's in mine. Can still get 45's, but not for long I imagine.

Champion lists the J8C for the model B and says to use a .030 gap but my manual and the plate on the side of the manifold says to use a .020 gap. I am figuring A-C knew what they wanted the plug to do so I always went with the .020 gap. Why would Champion list a larger gap. Has anyone used both gaps and noticed if one worked better than the other?

That's odd. My reprint B&C service manual, reprint B operator's manual and original B parts book and operating instructions ('42B w/mag) all indicate a spark plug gap at 0.030" to 0.040". My plate indicates 0.040" as shown here:

It's the points in the magneto (or distributor) that are set at 0.020". I gap my plugs at 0.040" per the plate - have for years, no matter if they are AC45, Autolite295 or NGK B4.
