I am working on eliminating leaks on my WC engine and have run into a problem. I have a leak where the shaft that the hand crank links up to goes into the block. I have bought the $6 seals that are supposed to fit in their and tried to install them on two occasions but both times I have been unsuccessfull. It doesn"t seem like the seal wants to go in there. It fits nicely around the shaft, but won"t recess back into the face plate on the front of the block. Are these seals always like this or is this a specific problem to my engine? Is there any trick to installing them? Is there a chance that I just need to smooth out the surface around the shaft so that it is more smooth? Thanks-guy in need of assistance

There is nothing that really locates the front cover of the engine in the proper place, The bolts just hold it on, they don't locate it with enough precision to center the seal on the crankshaft. What you have to do, and it is more difficult with the engine in the tractor is to center the front cover on the crankshaft so the seal will work right. Measure or gauge around the crank snout with something as you tighten the bolts, centering the crank snout in the hole, then carefully install the seal. You should take the front engine mount bolts and cross member out of the way. After put the cross member back in and measure the clearance, make a shim that is .005" more than what you measured and install it by loosening the cross member bolts and putting it in, then tightening everything. This is from a factory manual. It sounds like at the very least you need to check and see if your front cover is centered.

If I understand correctly. You are talking about the crank shaft oil seal that goes on the front of the timing gear cover.

I replaced that seal during a recent engine overhaul. I didn't have any problem installing the seal. I did have the engine on a stand at the time. Check to see if there is part of the old seal is still in the recess. The outside of the seal is a very tight fit to the recess. I use a socket the same size as the seal and tap (drive) the seal into the recess.
