I have a 1978-79 Simplicity 7014 Baron, garden tractor chassis #1690337 with a cast iron Briggs Engine model #326437 (needs replacement) which is no longer built at Briggs. I would like to know the engine model and/or serial number in an Allis Chalmers 714, chassis #1690396, with a Kohler 14hp engine. It is the same as the Simplicity tractor maufactured in 1979 for Allis. I was told that if I could find someone with a Simplicity or Allis Chalmers with the above chassis numbers powered by Kohler, all I would need is the engine serial number for replacement. Any information would be helpful ????

I would first start at your nearest Allis dealer, I know that sounds dumb but most of those guys know what else needs to be done to complete that conversion and some dealers sell both. There are other issues ie; throttle cable location and travel, choke travel and direction also that is a drive shaft tractor so drive shaft alignment is critical. Keep us posted, that tractor is an iron horse and is easily a 30 or 40 year tractor, I've sold a lot of 714's to townships, landscaping companies and they're still going. Question, is it a hydro or shuttle? Note: Steers like a freegan logwagon.

You know what? Now that I look back through my old records and books Allis didn't offer a 714 if I remember correctly and that is iffy, they offered a 712H and then went to 716H. They didn't offer a 14hp till the 900 series came out and it was a 914 Shuttle. Best to check your Allis dealer for details.

Richard,
try www.smallenginewarehouse.com
They list re-power engine kits for Simplicity and Allis garden tractors and may be able to help you.
I have dealt with them in the past, and they are good people.
Their phone number is 1-800-321-6725

I have a '60 Jim Dandy with the 8 hp Briggs & Stratton engine. I just got through buying an exhaust valve, set of rings, new spring and keeper for it. I have no doubt that this engine will be running fine again. Overhauling is certainly less than a new engine or buying used engine of unknown quality. Parts for these engines are available it just takes some head strong searching. Some B&S parts places don't recognize the older engine model numbers and will argue with you. Hang up on them and call another. That is what I had to do. I ordered a complete gasket kit too. B&S has to make it for me. It took them almost 1 month to take the oder, make it and ship it to my part service provider. When I got the valve, it was in one of the old old Briggs & Stratton boxes. Best of luck!

Recommend an overhaul of the Briggs engine. A new Kohler engine will cost you over $1000.00.
