Is a mechanically sound mag worth $40? It's complete, the impulse works but no spark.

It was on eBay and I won the bid at $39.50

I e-mailed the seller prior to the bid and was assured the impulse was working fine. It may only need points and condenser.

When they set around for a very long time for some reason the points get a film over them that will keep them from shorting out. They can look good and not short out, use a multi meter to check for continuity through the points. Not a good idea to check for spark with it though. A lot of coils were bought for old magmetos because the point were not cleaned or properly checked before trying to get them to spark. A new set of points will fix that any way.

I have that WICO that still won't fire. The points are clean and the conections are good but still no fire. It may be the coil but I'm swaping out the condenser first. Can you use a standard auto condenser just to check it out? How about a lawn mower condenser?

I don't know very much about what resistance each different condenser has. I just buy what is recommended by the manufacture.
Use an ohm meter to check out the coil as well as the points. It will save you a lot of time.

Can someone tell me how to align the gear of the distributor cap with the smaller gear in the distributor body? Thanks, Les Lynch
