Our fan belt recently broke on our WD45. Neither one of us in overly mechanically inclined, plus we don't remember what was done the last time it broke (about 20 years ago). It looks like you have to take apart quite a few pieces to get the new one on. How does one go about this?

It's not a very nice experience. As you can see, the lower radiator hose connects to the engine above the crank. That hose has to come off to get the belt in and out. On top of that, there is hardly enough room to slide the belt bewteen the crank pully and the lower neck on the radiator. I sort of "rolled" mine through, and it didn't crack the radiator. After a few choice words and a few bloody knuckles getting the hose on and off, you'll finally get the belt in there!

Mike, You got that right! I changed the belt on my WD last summer with what I thought looked like a pretty good used belt off one of my parts tractors. Big Mistake! Within 2 weeks, I was doing it all over again with a NEW belt. Then.... to top it all off, it was only about a month later I had to replace the belt on my WD-45. Needless to say, it got a NEW one too. I don't think I'll be needing to do that dreaded job again for a few years. One of the other problems one encounters with this job is getting the adjustable sheeve (pulley) working if required to get the proper tension. Brian G.

Brian - Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the adjustable sheeve only to change the speed that the fan and water pump run relative to the crank speed? If the same size belt is used, adjusting the generator should get the tension right. I guess I have never messed with the adjustable sheeve. Now that I think about it , maybe that's why one of dad's WDs is quiet, and the other has tremendous fan noise. Possibly, if you were doing near wide open throttle work at low engine speeds, a higher fan speed would be required to keep engine cool - that could be accomplished with the sheeve. I actually have no exeperience with this, and I am just guessing. Any thoughts, or notes from an AC manual on this?

Oh....by the way, the fan noise may be attributable to a five (rather than four) bladed fan. I don't know it it is original or not, but my WD-45 has a five-bladed fan, and it does make a little more noise than the WD.

Adjusting the "sheeve" would change fan/waterpump speed. Never thought about that. However, The reason I had to change it was to gain clearance between the lower part of the grill shell and the alternator fan. Note that I said alternator; that may account for the close tolerance. The manual shows a picture of the front of the engine labeled "Fan Belt Adjustment". It shows the "Belt Adjusting Diagonal Slot and Clamp Bolt" on the pulley as well as the "Generator Brace Adjusting Slot" but they only make mention of the generator movement for adjusting the fan belt. Anyway, if anybody experiences a lack of clearance for the Gen/Alt pulley fan, the adjustable "sheeve" will help to relieve the problem. Brian G.

Mike,
If it's similar to my RC, and I think it is, all that is required is to loosen the generator and tilt it towards the engine. Slip the new belt between the fan and radiator and place it around the pulleys. Tighten by pulling the generator away from the engine and tighten the bolts. The belt should deflect about 1/2" to 3/4" when you press it with your finger. Too tight will damage the water pump seal.
