I need some help with this one.

I'm swapping a new (from NAPA) Delco altenator into my '61 D15 series 1 gas. It's the three wire set-up, not a one wire. I've got full voltage at red/battery side of the double spade plug (on the side of the alt). The white side of the plug (that goes to the ignition switch) has no voltage.

What gives? Bad alt?

Thanks Steve. I guess I'll have to dig deeper into the wiring and trace stuff back. I guess now is the time to replace those broken gauges, too. I had hoped/planned on this alt install just being an afternoon project...

loos something like this. you need a small resistor, light bulb, or diode in the #1 line to drop voltage slighty to get it to charge, and also eliminate feedback

Okay, so maybe I didn't wire the switch right because I've got no power to the switch.

On that plug you should have the #2 wire going to the big post on the alternator and the #1 goes to the ignition switch, the side that is hot when turned on. Only time the #1 should have voltage is when the switch is turned on and that excites the windings making it charge
