My First Day on a Deere | My first recollection of riding on a (John) Deere was as a young child growing up on a Dairy farm in Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY. I guess I was about 6 or 7 years old at the time. My family was picking up hay bales with the JD-MT on the Flats behind the railroad tracks. Either my father or one of my older brothers who was driving the tractor let me hop on the seat with them and soon decided to let me 'drive' the MT in first gear as they ran along an helped throw on the hay bales. It got kind of scary as we approached the river at the edge field and I realized that no one had bothered to say what I should do when we get that far (or how to stop the tractor for that matter). Eventually one noticed my anxiety and hopped on the tractor again and directed me on the fine art of turning the tractor and wagon around. Over the next 10 years on the farm I put lots of hours on the JD's that we had over the years: JD60, JD620, JD70, JD3010, JD4030. I think the 4030 was my favorite, it must have been the sheer pleasure of having power steering after all the years of fighting with the 60. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects.
