Well, they must have done them several different ways. The spring used as a cushion was on top of the seat and the rubber donut was on the bottom on eagle hitch tractors in the manual, but just before eagle hitch the manual shows the donut on top. I'm assuming this tractor doesn't have eagle hitch as the fenders date it as pre 50. And you are correct that the nut needs to be a castle nut to prevent it coming off.
