as to the cost, I seen a report that JD had done some years back on the cost of putting up hay, they claimed that round baling was the the most cost effective and that it kept the best, that said the next was small square bales only because of the labor involved getting the squares in the stack/or barn, to me a square baler makes a very good long life product when I am as we do not stack hay inside as a general rule a well made stack of squares other than the top and bottom bales can stay good for a long time, a round bale made with a belt baler and properly "stacked" ( I do not stack round bales any more I just place them end to end with a couple feet between the rows so water can shed, but most people can not do this as they haven't the room) will last a fair amount of time also, a square baler requires a certain amount of knowlage to keep it in top shape and for when a tying problem comes up tha a round baler does not require, also a round baler can put a huge amount of hay in bales in the same time compared to a small square baler, for me I do like the round baler as it is generaly me doing all the work other than I do get ome help swathing at times,, not sure if I answered your question as to my hay most of mine is a Crested Wheat grass/Alfalfa mixture here is a pic of my field before cutting this one is just Alfalfa cnt
