Ray, there really isn't any determinate dimension for the diameter of the brake drum as to when they should be replaced. If they are scarred or grooved excessivley, they should be replaced before having the shoes relined. I doubt they can be repaired, except by metalizing. Then extreme care must be taken so that the drums don't crack or break when removing. Either way, this is not an easy task, but can be done with patience and a good shop to work in. Final drives must be removed (preferrably one at a time); then the drum pulled off the axle. If you're replacing them, probably best to just break the rim and web away from the hub as most people don't have a puller that large. Then drill a hole right over and up to the keyway. Size it so that a tapered punch will barely start in the hole. For instance; 5/16 diameter at the point. With a few good whacks with a 2# hammer, the hub will split at the keyway. Buck up the hub when doing this. The new (or rebuilt) drums need to be carefully heated up so that the bore will expand and will slide on the axle. It's important to gradually heat these up so as not to cause cracking. When installing, better have a length of pipe & a sledge at the ready to help in case it cools down too rapidly and gets stuck. (Don't ask me how I know this...) The drum counterbore must go over and locate against the snap ring.
