We've shifted using the power director (D14/ D15 / D17 / 190XT / 200) and hand clutch (Wd / WD45) with the pto running an implement such as a baler or mower for years with no problems - and I mean 30 to 40 years here, not 2 or 3. Like they said, you have to shift quick!!! If it starts grinding push in the foot clutch. Our AC dealer showed us how to shift like that some years ago. Once you get the knack it's no big deal, but you still miss it once in a while. The hard shift for me using the power director was (and still is) 2nd to reverse on the D14 / D15 tractors. You can do it but you can't hesitate...
