The gears in the transmission are stopped when the Power Director (hand) clutch is in neutral and the tractor is not moving, PTO running or not. There is some pull on the gears due to the drag in the PD clutches and if you stop between gears the transmission will start turning and you will have to clutch it and let things come to a stop before shifting. We pulled a pulltype combine for 10 years with a D-15 and shifted gears without hitting the foot clutch. You must be quick on the shift, a slow shift will grind gears every time. I am not saying that a person can do this without doing any harm, only that it can be done without immediatly damaging the transmission. If I had a D series to play with now, I would stop, shift gears with the foot clutch and go onward, not being in any hurry plus transmission parts are darn expensive.
