I had something like this happen before but my problem turned out to be a bad magneto oil seal...Your problem sounds different. First, did the backfire go through the carb or out the exhaust? If out the exhaust I'd pull the sparkplugs and wire brush them and while out, turn the motor over a few times while holding the carb butterflies (choke and throttle plate) wide open (no gas) then hook things up and try to get a burp with a little shot of starting fluid. BTW the sparkplugs always listed for this engine are incorrect in that the shank length is too short at 1/4". You should get some 1/2" length shank plugs, this makes the electrodes positioned as they should be near the combustion chamber..this made a lot of difference on mine... If you had a backfire through the carb you may have either blown gaskets or jammed a butterfly...Try a pretty good tapping on the carb body with a screwdriver before starting, pull the aircleaner bottom and see if gas leaks out with the valve on...If yes then it's the carb that needs attention.... Do make sure that your carb mounting bolts are snug, not really tight.....

Still another is the alternator. No doubt using the original generator keeps the tractor pure, but for thos
