'39 B magneto timing question

Posted by Greenhorn on August 07, 2000 at 11:22:01 from (156.46.177.29):

Please excuse me if I word this wrong, but I'm new to this, thus the name Greenhorn. My buddy (he's the mechanic) and I are trying to get the '39 "B" running. The coil, (and a few other small parts) were missing from the magneto when we got it, thus it wasn't running. Got all new pieces for the magneto. Here's the problem. Can't get spark to the spark plug. We have proven that spark is coming from the new coil inside the magneto, but can't get it from there to the plug. Plugs are new and wires have been proven to work (took them off of my WD.) Distributor cap, points and rotor are new. My buddy believes that it's a timing issue. There are no timing marks anywhere in the magento to line up to or to reference. He took it apart and tested about two dozen different positions/settings of the gear inside the distributor with no luck. Unfortunately I can't explain it any better than this. Can anybody provide some instructions or suggestions that I can provide him? Or can you point me to another source. Thanks
