Very simple. Since it should be a - ground run a wire from the + of the battery to the ignition side of the coil as in hot wire it. If you have spark from the coil wires as in center wire from the cap and it then runs your problem is from the coil back if you still do not have spark then you problem is forward. If when hot wired you have no spark pull the distributor cap rotor and dust cover with it hot wired open and close the points by hand be careful or you will find the spark the hard way. You should both see and hear a spark at the points. If you do not the points are bad or something is shorted out. Move the engine just enough to have the points open wide then hook and unhook the hot wire if you have spark at that wire you have a short in the system
