The problem probably is a worn follower on the lever shaft. Remove the starter, gas tank, tool box and the steering arm. This will allow you to remove the side plate on the steering gear box, Pull the lever shaft out and you will see that the follower is worn flat on the sides. This part (the follower) can be purchased from a JD dealer. If there is slop in the front pedestal, you must jack up the front end, remove the wheels, and the 5 bolts at the top of the pedestal tube. You will find shims and gaskets between the 2 pieces. Remove 1 or 2 to remove the slop. You need to have a rotation of gasket, shim, gasket, or gasket, gasket, to provent leaks. Don't remove too many as you will remove all of the slop in the gears and you need to have some play. LOL Bob
