My neighbor has had an AC round baler for the last forty years or more. He has more pasture than he uses so he pasture it all early then blocks the cows out of the flatter areas later. Late August he mows the grown up pasture and bales it with the AC Roto baler. Then when we get the first snows he lets his cows into the baled pasture. They go bale to bale cleaning them up. Don"t seem to waste much. HE usually does not have to start feeding hay until mid winter.
He has a real late model one with a Fiber glass top. He bought it several years ago for $500, always shedded. He claims it does not bale as well as the older ones. So he uses an older one. He buys them at auctions from $50-$400 for parts. He uses a modern wheel rake with it spread out in the back to make the double windrow you need. He can cover a lot of ground in a day baling.
For many of the small acreage guys they would work great and can be stored out side. Just a little different to handle. I found just using two hay hooks works fine to handle them with.
