Mosquito Dunks are very effective for small bodies of standing water, I use them in a fish pond when the fish don't keep ahead of the mosqitoes. They contain a bacteria spore that kills mosqitoes at the larve stage in about a day after application. "BTI" is the bacteria, short for "Bacilllus Thuringlensis Israelensis". You apply one tablet for every 100 to 200 square feet about every two weeks or when you start to see larve on the surface again. I have noticed when you use them heavily they also reduce the number of new fish that hatch in the pond too.
The dunks work well in small ponds but they would get expensive for larger areas.
In the Minneapolis area many cities spread bulk BTI granuals on their ponds and lakes from helicoptors in the spring to fight mosquitoes.
