The only rule of thumb I heard was that it's not wise to use clamp-ons when the main inner wheel is stamped steel. The theory is, and I saw this once, that the extra stress can crack the center out of a stamped wheel. That could kinda unplug your coffee pot if it happened in the middle of a field a mile from home.
I ran clamp-ons on an 856 Farmall with cast main wheels for a coupla years with no problem. Ran into a good deal on a pair of axle mounts so I switched.
