Your five year plan is good, it gives you a chance to ease into things and see if you like farming. In the short term, a good tenant is your best bet. If he is nearing retirement, he might even help you get started on your own. In the long term we are all going to be dead, so try to hang onto your ground and leave it to your kids.
A 150 acre farm is not very big these days. There are lots of ways to go wrong. You need to be the smart guy who learns from others mistakes and doesn't insist on making all of them himself. Like the others said, make friends of the neighbors, the county extension agent, and the bank's farm loan officer. They are the ones who know what works and what doesn't.
