Acetylene is the offshoot of calcium carbide,which us a product of mixing coke and lime at very high temps and dates back to 1888.The"carbide" lamps used on early cars,locomotives,etc were acetylene lamps,where the gas was generated by a chemical reaction of water dripping into the carbide powder.Old garages,factories,blacksmiths used to have their own acetylene generators"out back",which were phased out by safety laws,product standardization and modern transportation.As Acetylene can be mfg in quantity andwhere that coal and limestone are available..there is NO reason to IMPLY a "foreign trade" issue. Plainly and simply,the "shortage,so to speak was triggered by a major explosion/fire at a Union Carbide Plant which mfgs a very large percentage of US acetylene and resultant panic buying NOT some evil foreign Power.
