My Ranger is real good in the snow so I'd believe an Escape to be so too. A year ago I went hunting with my cousins in their Escape, it was an '04 I think and I've never ridden in such a poor offroad vehicle. Even my Dad's Jeep Cherokee with car tires (which was poor offroad) was better. We got it stuck so many times I can't count. Only good thing was that because it was small and light it got out pretty easy.
Of course they've revised the Escape at least once since then.
Its good on gas but I guess if I were really worried about that I'd drive a car. Oh wait, I do...
