My whole farm was run on a 60 amp service into the '90s. Deep well, electric clothes drier, electric water heater, welder and other farm shop stuff, a few 2 hp motors here & there.
Saw a lot of flickering lights tho. :)
I agree with you, that cheap wire might be one of the more expensive things he buys, when he has to upgrade the service in a couple years to something bigger. Welder, air compressor, grinder idling in the back, few lights on.... 50 amps goes quick in a shop.
Mom couldn't wash clothes when dad was welding.....
