Not sure, but some people can, some not. Something to do with magnetic fields or similar. I have an old locating device like a meter, you just held it by it's strap just above ground and it would move when over a pipe. My brother can't but I can. Like in the post below, grab a couple flag markers, if to long I'd smack em with whatever was handy against the track to cut. This will probly start some nay sayer's, but when they started useing "safe" flags (plastic staff) I tried it using a lighter to heat and bend. It works fine, metal or plastic "L" rods, metal or plastic pipe or wire doesn"t matter. Me and my buddy were always double checking the marker crew and catch mismarks.
