Jeesh, why is everyone so down on St. Louis? There are bad parts north of downtown (like north of the Edward Jones Dome) and obviously East St. Louis (which is in Illinois and not part of St. Louis). Downtown is safe, and I would have no problems staying in a hotel downtown. Yes, we have our crime, but that number is skewed, and does not account for the entire metro STL area & Suburbs (just the city proper, which is rather small). Most of those crime statistics are from north of downtown.
The other areas you mentioned are safe (Fenton, Chesterfield, Collinsville, IL). A lot of people stay in Westport area (Page & I-270). I would suggest staying in St. Charles, MO. Nice town along the Missouri River off of I-70. Nice selection of hotels, close to Bass Pro and Cabelas. They have a REAL nice historical downtown area with little shops, brick paved streets, etc. The downtown thing is nice if you have ladies in the group.
