: I have decided that I need a small tractor to help maintain my property and I was hoping that some of the knowlegable readers of this list could give me some recommendations. I have never owned a tractor before so please excuse my ignorance.

: The machine will be used primarily for mowing grass, plowing snow and some landscaping. The property has a lot of trees so it needs to be fairly manouverable to mow around them. I am not looking to spend a lot of money and I have seen quite a few tractors that are over 40 years old that are still quite servicable, so an older machine will do just fine. I am told that live hydraulics and a three point hitch are important features. What other features should I consider? What makes and models of tractors would suit my application and why? I would like to get a common model so that parts availability won't be a problem.

: Any help is greatly appreciated.

: Thanks in advance,

I use a 47 Farmall Cub around my property. I use it to plow snow, move lose dirt around, plow my garden, mow lawn etc. and I love it. It doesn't have a 3 point hitch and live hydraulics would be nice. I would think one of the smaller Ford N's would be a good choice for you, as they have a 3 point hitch. Plus they typically sit alot lower and might be better for mowing around trees etc. A Cub low boy would also not be bad for the mowing end of it. With a Cub, there are alot of implement available, but they are more specific to the tractor and would not be as universal as the 3 point attachments. I don't miss having a 3 point hitch that much, but depending on what all you are using the tractor for, it might be a little more important to you. There are a ton of N's around and parts availability is great. I have never owned one, but have friends and neighbors that have them and they seem to be a very dependable unit. Hope this helps.

I have been a collector of Farmall tractors since 1990 when I first obtained part of the family farm in Eastern Indiana. My current collection includes a 1938 F20, 1945 H, 1946 H, and the recently purchased 1951 H. This article will focus on what I encountered and what I did to bring the 1951 NEAR DEATH Farmall H back to life. ... [Read Article]
