You need to strip the insulation back and put the end of the wire and crimp it under the terminals. As far as carbon core or resistance wires goes, use them if you have an AM radio and you want to hear the programming. I've had the same carbon core wires on my CA for 15 years and Oliver 60 for 6 years. You only need the copper core wire for a magneto equipped engine.
