When the points are open, do you read voltage (~8 volts for a 12 volt system) between the distributor side of the coil and ground? If you don't get voltage, either you aren't getting voltage to the coil, the coil is bad or you have a bad ground.
When the points are closed, do you get zero volts at the same location? If the point voltage doesn't go to zero, either the points aren't closing, the points are bad, or the distributor isn't grounded (unlikely).
